A Book Publisher’s Point Of View

By: Oli Osorhan
Posted: Nov 09, 2009

Many writers aspire to write books. Writing a book is a long, involved, difficult process. Book publishing is harder. A writer may submit his book repeatedly only to be turned down. The writer may eventually succeed. Wouldn’t it have been easier to get published the first time? Is that possible?

You can improve your chances of a publisher accepting your book manuscript if you understand more about what happens at the publisher’s desk. Book publishers are busy people with several projects bombarding their desks every day. They must decide quickly about what will sell. They must also delegate their time efficiently to keep the business running. Only occasionally do publishers actually seek out work. Let’s look at a typical work day of a publisher to help you understand book acceptance and book publishing.

PERSIST AND PERSEVERE

Writers must be persistent. Regardless of how many times a publisher rejects your book manuscript and throws your ideas in the trash, you have to keep going back for more discouragement. Eventually you’ll make it in the door. If you can get all the way through, you will finally get to a place where publishers accept more of your work. When working with a book publisher, the rule is the same. If you have a book that you know will sell, you must persevere to get the publisher’s attention. Most likely, you will be sending excerpts of your book, not the entire book, to a publisher. As you continually send your manuscript or book excerpts to publisher after publisher, you should try to market it in different ways. Publishers seek a particular kind of writing; they will dismiss anything that doesn’t meet their criteria and high standards. Variation in your marketing techniques may turn a rejected book into an accepted book.

WHAT DO BOOK PUBLISHERS WANT?

Book publishing is a strange business. People’s tastes are somewhat fickle. A book publisher has to keep up with what kinds of books will sell. It seems mysteries will always have a place on the bookshelves. Crichton and Grisham may tie up the book market until they are finished. That is just one example from one genre of books. Publishers have to keep track of what is selling in all areas of literature. The best way for you to get your work noticed is to make it look similar to what is already selling in the marketplace. Be careful not to imitate style or voice of another author. Write with your own unique words while imitating the use of popular public opinion. Another way to improve your chances of getting published is to find out who’s publishing what.

ARE YOU MARKETING TO THE RIGHT PUBLISHER?

Some publishers specialize in a certain kind of writing. If you are writing a novel, you’ll look stupid (and get rejected) if you send it to publishers who publish technical manuals. How do you find out who is the most likely candidate to publish your work? There are reference manuals, such as Writer’s Market, at your library that will tell you who’s publishing what and what publishers are seeking. It will contain valuable information leading you to children’s book publishers, novel publishers, and textbook publishers. If the handbook at your library is not up to date, your next option is to check out the new releases and best sellers rack at the bookstore. Buy a few books and read them. You’ll have a much better feel for the book market as a consumer first, and book writer second.

Book publishing is difficult to break into. It can be helpful to approach the issue from the direction of the publisher. Before you submit your manuscript again, improve your chances of acceptance by following these tips:

1) Change your marketing style so that you grab attention;

2) Make sure you are a book consumer yourself. You’ll get a better feel for what’s selling and what a publisher will buy. You’ll also find out who is publishing which types of books.

3) Finally, by buying the product you are trying to sell, you will improve the book economy all together. Publishers need to see people buying books before they can commit to publishing more.

Many authors begin their careers with the single goal of getting their book published by a reputable publisher. Book publishing is difficult to accomplish. It takes many months of work and extensive preparation. Writing a book involves intricately woven ideas. A book is a project, and it may contain many other projects that involve research, development, and marketing. Most authors are disillusioned about the intensive process of creating a full, coherent book. Writing a book and finding a publisher is like nothing you have ever done before. It will take extensive and intensive work and development. It will also probably include much of everything you know, and more.

Book Publishers: Be careful before you sign with a book publisher

Article by Dee Power

The wrong book publisher can turn your dream of becoming an author into a nightmare. One out of every eight people call themselves a writer, which means there are roughly 24 million people in the United States who carry that banner. Unfortunately there are charlatans and scam artists just waiting to ambush the unsuspecting author. How can a novice writer protect themselves against unscrupulous book publishers?

Anyone can call themselves a book publisher. Always remember money flows towards the author from the book publisher, not the other way around.

What to look out for: The book publisher charges the author a fee up front, to have their book accepted, considered or read. These fees are sometimes called a reading fee, intake fee or administrative fee.

The book publisher directs authors toward specific editing services or gives authors’ names to these services, with the caveat that if the author hires the editing service, their book will be published. Every book needs editing. It is part of the publisher’s job to provide that editing at no cost.

The book publisher offers a contract where the author has to pay for part of the publishing costs. The acquisition editor will sometimes say that the publisher’s list is full for that season, but the author’s book has so much going for it, they would still like to publish it. However the publisher’s resources are fully committed and the author will have to share in the costs.

Some book publishers offer contracts that are unfair, such as they obtain rights that should remain with the author of the work. Some book publishers’ contracts contain a clause that if the author says anything negative about the book publisher, there is a monetary fine. There are also book publishers who hold the rights for a lengthy time period, regardless of whether the book is still in print or selling.

The book publisher doesn’t disclose they are a Publish on Demand (POD), or vanity/subsidy publisher, or actually denies they are a POD book publisher. There is nothing wrong with an author using a subsidy/vanity book publishing company as long as the author is well aware of the disadvantages.

Publish on Demand books are not, as a rule, stocked by bookstores. Some POD book publishers will insist that their books are available in book stores, as a way to get around this issue. Available is not the same thing as stocked. Available only means the book can be ordered through the bookstore. Since the majority of books sold, are stocked and sold by bookstores, this situation puts a damper on sales.

What else can a writer do to check if a book publisher is legitimate? Go to the local bookstore and see if any of the book publisher’s titles are stocked. Ask the manager if necessary. Search the Internet using the book publisher’s name plus the word ‘scam’ or ‘complaint.’A book publisher’s website is targeted to its customers. If the website promotes the books they’ve published that’s a good sign. If the website is focused on recruiting writers, that’s a bad sign. Go to forums or bulletin boards that are for writers and see what the authors who have published with the book publisher you’re considering have to say about their experience.

3 Myths About the Book Publishing Process You Should Know

By: Anthony Obey
Posted: Feb 23, 2011

If there’s one thing authors have to know more about before expecting to succeed in the print industry, it’s the book publishing process. Some authors may underestimate its demands while others may be too intimidated by some concepts of it that they become too afraid to even try. Don’t be either of them and be aware of the most common myths surrounding the book publishing processes.

1. Once you have completed writing your book, it is up to the publisher to market it.

You, as the author, write your book. The publishers reproduce and distribute your book. Now, who is responsible for marketing your book? Still you.

As the author your work does not end in putting the last punctuation mark in your manuscript and handing it to the publishers for printing. Many authors have gone after big names in publishing thinking it would be enough to bring the book to the top of the bestseller lists, but ending up disappointed. The reality is that getting a large publishing house to publish your book does not guarantee massive sales. Neither will your book self itself once it gets on the shelves. Ultimately, the success of your book still lies in your hands, and you have to take marketing seriously if you are to make your book a smash hit among readers. Therefore, learn the most effective book marketing strategies, create a blueprint outlining your marketing plan, and put that plan into action. Among all the people involved in the book publishing process, you are the key person. You know the exact reason why you wrote your book and how it will fill a need in the target market, so you are the primary person who can best promote your book.

2. After you have completed your manuscript, it will take years before your book gets finally published.

How many times have you heard the story of a now famous author who has been turned down by numerous publishing companies for years before getting a big break and finally getting a book on print with a happy ever after? Indeed, traditional publishing can make finding a publisher a very long and difficult task considering the rejection and challenges you have to go through in trying to convince publishing houses your book is worth the investment. But nowadays traditional publishing is not the only option. Authors now have the choice to self-publish or publish a book with a print-on-demand (POD) publisher. In self-publishing, the amount of time it will take to publish a book will depend on how prompt the author can learn the process and get the financial resources required. In publishing with a POD publisher, your book can usually be published in 30, 60, or 90 days after you have finished your manuscript. With more options for the modern day author, there is no reason why you should get stuck for years trying to get a publishing house to print your book.

3. The publisher knows what’s best and therefore controls all aspects of the book.

In the book publishing processes, authors have traditionally let the publishers decide on the look, editing and other aspects of the book because of the idea that publishers know more about those aspects than they do. But though publishers may have more experience with regard to it, you as the author still have the most in-depth understanding about what your book is all about. The trends the publishers know can only serve as your guide, so check to see that the publishing contract gives you your desired amount of control when it comes to the layout and editing of your book.
